The Clam Before The Storm

HA! I got you.

You probably thought "clam" was a typo.

It's not.

Let me explain.

Back in the day, I worked at an overnight nature camp called Outdoor School in Oregon.

Hundreds of sixth graders would arrive every Sunday at noon in a line of big yellow school buses to spend a week with us.

For the staff members, our Sunday schedule, affixed to our official clipboards, went like this:

9:30AM Staff back onsite

10:00AM All-staff meeting

10:30AM Clam Before the Storm

11:30AM Welcome buses

12:00PM Lunch

Without fail, every new staff member would giggle when they first saw the schedule and tell Puttly (the camp name of our fearless leader) that there was a typo.

"Yes," he would say, "that once was a typo, but now it's not."

He'd go on: "This time is indeed the time to enjoy the quiet before all the kids get here, the 'calm before the storm,' and to do that, we are all going to 'clam' up and not say a word to each other during this time.

We're going to go off by ourselves, clear our heads, take a walk, do any last minute prep that we need to do in order to be at the parking lot at 11:30, singing our welcome song as these kids pull in on the buses, ready to be 100% there for them for the next six days.

Got it? Ready?"

I loved Clam. The camp was situated right at the foot of Mt. Hood and I had a favorite quiet spot to sit and take in all its stunning glory.

So, let’s talk about you.

Is September feeling a bit like an impending storm?

Could you also use some space set aside so you can catch your breath and get ready?
